Whilst attaching buttons, you could use an extended skinny metal crotchet hook,push it via from the back and hook it around the string which you have tied to the button and pull the 2 stands of string thru, before tying it of, use a piece of vintage material or a piece of foam underneath the knot,to keep it from slipping through or sinking into the lower back, when tying string to the buttons, simply fold sting in half of, you may need the two pieces of string when tying off on the back,hope this helps.
